A Tale of Two Commencements

Next week at the Notre Dame Joyce Athletic Center, there will be two commencement ceremonies taking place. The first one involves my workplace, Indiana University South Bend. Several years ago, we ran out of space so we moved our commencement there so that graduates wouldn't be limited to the number of guests that could attend. So for one day, Notre Dame is decked out in IU red. Our special speaker is always the President of IU.

The other commencement ceremony taking place there the following weekend features a speaker you've probably heard of. Yeah, this is when Obama will finally show up in what has been a big controversy in the Catholic Church and the pro-life circles. There has been pressure for the university to rescind it's invitation, but that would never happen. Alan Keyes is coming to town to protest Obama's pro-abortion stance and Randall Terry had already set up shop some time ago. Obama has had an easy go of it so far, a little controversy and protest was bound to happen at some point. I can't say I exactly agree with his stands on abortion, so I say more power to the protesters, but it's not my thing to get out there and march.

I believe this is Obama's first commencement speech. Back in 2001, Notre Dame is also where George W. Bush gave his first commencement speech.
